Description
Elegant, understated, and unmistakably Japanese, this sculptural crane by Tadahiro Baba transforms three everyday objects into one refined work of modern design.

At first glance it appears to be a minimalist bird sculpture. The elongated neck forms the crane's beak while a small circular opening suggests the eye, reducing the bird to a series of beautifully balanced geometric forms. Soft relief feathers animate the otherwise smooth body, giving the piece a quiet sense of movement.

Lift the base and another function is revealed: inside is a traditional beni compartment for storing the red pigment used when applying personal seals. Hidden within the body is also a bell, allowing the sculpture to serve as an elegant table bell while preserving its clean sculptural silhouette.

Objects like this exemplify the Japanese postwar approach to industrial craft, where utility and sculpture are treated as equals. Rather than disguising its functions, Baba integrates them so naturally that the object remains visually complete whether admired as sculpture or used in daily life.
