Material: Carved wood with traces of gilt

Condition: Good vintage condition with age-related wear. Traces of an earlier gilt surface remain. Mounted on a later wooden display stand, which is believed not to be original to the sculpture.

What drew us to this sculpture wasn't exceptional age or elaborate carving—it was the face.

Many wooden Buddhist sculptures miss the mark in subtle ways. The proportions may feel awkward, the eyes heavy, or the mouth slightly tense. Here, everything settles naturally. The expression is balanced, peaceful, and quietly reassuring without feeling sentimental.

The surface shows honest age and wear, with traces of an earlier gilt finish still visible across the carving. The base appears to be a later addition, made simply to display the figure securely.
