Condition: Very good antique condition with rich brown patina, crisp carving, surviving gold highlights, and expected age-related wear. Minor losses to the gold decoration consistent with age.

Notes: This finely carved iron tsuba is decorated with an abundant arrangement of seasonal flowers rendered in high relief, creating an unusually rich surface while preserving the understated elegance associated with Japanese sword fittings. The floral composition wraps continuously across both sides of the guard, demonstrating careful planning and refined workmanship.

Scattered throughout the design are remnants of gold highlighting that once accented selected petals, creating subtle flashes of contrast against the warm iron ground. Although some of this gilding has worn naturally with age, its survival adds depth and character while reflecting centuries of careful handling.

The guard is signed Masaharu (正春). A second inscription appears to read 武州住 (Bushū jū), indicating a craftsman from Bushū (historic Musashi Province, including present-day Tokyo and surrounding areas), although this reading should be regarded as tentative without examination in hand.

Unlike many highly ornate sword guards that rely on multiple alloys and elaborate inlay, this example achieves its visual richness primarily through confident carving and restrained use of gold. The result is a sophisticated balance between sculptural relief, naturalistic floral forms, and the quiet beauty of aged iron.

Today, pieces of this quality are appreciated equally as examples of Japanese metalwork and as works of miniature sculpture, making them attractive additions to collections of samurai art, Japanese antiques, or decorative arts.
