This iron tsuba is a wonderful example of how much character can be achieved through restraint. Rather than relying on precious-metal decoration, the maker shaped the guard itself into a softly lobed chrysanthemum form, then opened the surface with elegant sukashi (pierced openwork) that creates a pleasing rhythm of positive and negative space.

Viewed from different angles, the silhouette constantly changes. The openwork lightens what is otherwise a substantial iron guard, while the irregular forged surface has developed the rich texture and dark patina that collectors prize in older iron tsuba.
