Notes:
This unusual ikebana vessel has been carved from a substantial section of bamboo root, making full use of the plant's natural character. Rather than disguising the material, the maker has incorporated the branching root structure into an elegant sculptural handle that rises organically above the vessel, giving the piece a striking silhouette from every angle.
The carved decoration combines stylized plum blossoms, sweeping branches and a gourd motif, all traditional auspicious symbols in Japanese decorative arts. The warm, dark patina has developed over decades of handling and use, highlighting the crisp carving while preserving the natural grain and texture of the bamboo.
Perhaps the most intriguing feature is the removable fitted lid, itself carefully carved and signed on the underside, with a matching signature impressed into the base of the vessel. This level of attention suggests the work of an individual craftsman rather than a purely utilitarian workshop piece. Whether originally intended for ikebana, as a decorative container, or as part of a tea or scholar's display, it possesses the quiet presence characteristic of finely made Japanese folk craftsmanship.
Today it makes an exceptional display object on its own, while also lending itself beautifully to seasonal flower arrangements, branches, or as a sculptural accent within a Japanese-inspired interior.
