Daruma is remembered today as the founder of Zen Buddhism, but in Japanese art he often appears less as a historical figure than as a symbol of perseverance, discipline, and unwavering practice.

What immediately catches one's attention is the expression on his face.

Many Daruma figures are exaggerated into caricature—fierce, comic, or almost cartoonish. This one feels more human. The heavy brow, upward gaze, and slightly pursed mouth suggest someone deep in thought rather than someone posing for effect. There's a quiet determination in the face that becomes more apparent the longer you spend with it.

The flowing red robe gives the sculpture a welcome sense of movement while contrasting beautifully with the dark complexion and beard. Standing about 30 cm tall, it's large enough to hold its own on a bookshelf or console without overwhelming the space.
