Antique Japanese Hikifuda Advertising Broadside — Cranes in Bamboo at New Year, Taisho Era

This Japanese hikifuda (advertising broadside) was produced for a kimono merchant in Nagahama Port, Iyo Province (present-day Ehime Prefecture). The design centers on three cranes in a bamboo grove before the first rising sun of the New Year—an auspicious combination symbolizing longevity, resilience, and renewal. Unlike many busier commercial broadsides of the period (1915-1930), this example uses a restrained composition and strong graphic contrast, giving it a strikingly modern visual presence. Such hikifuda were often distributed to customers at year’s end as gifts and seasonal advertisements.
