Antique Japanese Advertising Poster (hikifuda), Mother & Daughter, Textile Shop

This rare Japanese antique advertising broadsheet poster was for a merchant selling both luxury and practical fabrics (merchant name: probably Watanabe Kumamatsu). Importantly, the poster includes a calendar of important events and is dated as Taisho 5, (1916). This was an brilliant advertising device that would have been hung in the shop and distributed to customers as a gift they could use to adorn their homes and view all year for reference (keeping the merchant name visible). The shop was located in Shiroishi Nakamachi, Echigo province (or possibly Shirone/Shiroishi depending on old place naming). Thematically the visual strongly imply New Year's (note the plum blossoms, symbolic of spring) and the woman carrying a Jubako for formal visiting and celebration of with New Year foods (osechi-ryori). The child is carrying a tray featuring Hotei a lucky god symbolizing an auspicious coming year with luck and prosperity.
