A powerful late-period print by Azechi Umetaro featuring his iconic yamabito (mountain man), rendered here in one of his most austere and psychologically resonant winter settings. Against a cold blue-green sky and stark white mountain forms, the solitary figure stands cloaked in black, carrying rope and a green satchel—symbols of labor, endurance, and mountain life.

Azechi’s mature work distilled the mountain figure into a highly personal symbolic language: part self-portrait, part archetype, part spiritual wanderer. In Winter Mountain Man, that language reaches a striking clarity. The reduced palette, rough woodgrain textures, and monumental stillness give the work an unusual gravity.

This is an excellent example of Azechi’s later style—minimal, contemplative, and deeply tied to the mythology of Japan’s mountain culture. A strong collector’s piece from one of the defining voices of modern Japanese printmaking.
