A compelling late-period work by Azechi Umetaro depicting two of his iconic yamabito (mountain men), rendered in his unmistakable symbolic style. Here the larger foreground figure carries a smaller companion figure on his back, transforming the image into something more intimate and psychologically layered than many of Azechi’s solitary mountain portraits.

By the late 1970s, Azechi had fully distilled his visual language into flattened geometric forms, rough-hewn textures, and reduced but highly deliberate color relationships. In Two Mountain Men, that reduction creates a striking balance between playfulness and existential weight—qualities central to Azechi’s mature work.

The relationship between the two figures invites multiple readings: burden, companionship, memory, or inheritance. This ambiguity, paired with Azechi’s powerful graphic economy, makes the print a particularly strong example of his late symbolic mountain imagery.
